You made it through the maze of boarding, grabbed a fancy cocktail, and found your way to your cruise vacation home away from home. But wait… before you unpack those bags and head off to discover the wonders that await you, here are 5 things to do first!

BE SURE YOUR DOOR IS SECURE

As soon as you unlock your door and walk into the cabin, turn around and make sure that the door also closes and locks properly. There’s no Ring doorbell watching your door when you’re up on deck basking in the sun.

SWITCH YOUR PHONE TO AIRPLANE MODE

You don’t want to risk ruining all of your great trip memories by coming home to a huge phone bill due to international roaming! Turn off your phone, or at least put it on airplane mode, to prevent unintentional data usage and unwanted charges.

CONFIRM THE CLEAN FACTOR

Although cleaning rules have been greatly enhanced due to Covid, take a few minutes to walk around the cabin and check the current state of cleanliness. Everything from the bathroom sink and counter to the desk and nightstands should be spotless.

Especially pay attention to the bed, comforter, and bedding… pull up the sheet corners and check along the mattress seams for bed bugs (ewww!) and any stains or dirt. If anything looks questionable, contact guest services immediately and request a new room.

CHECK THE OUTLETS

There are typically not a lot of outlets in the cabin and they may not be easily accessible. So, it’s helpful to test and see that the ones you do have are working properly. If not, let guest services know and they can send someone to fix the issue.

You might want to consider packing an outlet expander when you take into account how many phones, tablets, and other devices all seem to need charging at the same time! Some have both outlets and USB ports included, and the expander is useful when you get back home too!

While you’re at it, if you packed light and are planning to use the hair dryer that’s provided now is a good time to verify that it’s working. Otherwise, you could unexpectedly (and unhappily) find out when you have a head full of soaking wet hair.

USE THE SAFE

Since your keycard is all you really need while out and about the ship, your valuables (wallet, jewelry, and passport) will need a safe place to hang out. Now is the time to be sure that it’s locking and unlocking so you can relax when leaving those important things behind.

Taking a few extra minutes to verify that everything is ship-shape will assure that it will be smooth sailing ahead for the rest of the trip!
